Roles in a thrift group

The roles in a standalone thrift group (Administrator, Officer, Collector, Member), what each can do, and how to give someone a role on web and phone.

Everyone in a thrift group holds a role, and a role decides what they can see and do. A standalone group has four:

RoleWhat they can do
AdministratorRuns the group: circles, people, payments, payouts and settings. Approves payouts, and is the only one who can set a circle's payout order by hand.
OfficerRuns circles day to day: adds and approves people, confirms payments, records payments for members, manages rules, reports. Does not approve payouts.
CollectorCollects contributions from the people assigned to them and records cash. A collector does not confirm payments: the officer's handover count does.
MemberPays into a circle and sees their own records. Everyone is a member as well as anything else.

A person can hold more than one role. The roles that exist only for an association (Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Election Committee) are not offered in a thrift group.

Give someone a role

Go to SettingsUser Management, find the person, and give them the role. See also Assigning roles.

The person must already have a login and be approved. To invite someone who does not have one yet, invite them from the people list first.

Good to know

  • You cannot change your own roles. Ask another Administrator. A group always keeps at least one Administrator.
  • You can only give a role whose permissions you hold yourself. The roles a thrift group offers are built so that its Administrator holds all of them, so you will always see Officer and Collector in the list.
  • Taking a role away is recorded, with who did it and when, in the audit log.
  • Keep the jobs apart. The person who collects cash should not be the only person who confirms it. That is why a collector cannot confirm a transfer and an officer cannot approve a payout. See Officer accountability.
